We’ve got a split decision on this episode here at CW Source Central. The majority loved it – it was light, it was snarky, it had a creepy ghost and lots of brotherly banter. But a vocal minority thought the episode just didn’t quite gel – yeah, the elements were there, but they didn’t hang together. What do you think? Need to refresh your memory? Read a full recap!
Here’s the stuff we all agree on: The brotherly interaction blew us away. Dean was in full-on snarktastic mode, and Sam kept trying to remind him that, dude, we’re in JAIL, and that’s BAD. Which was your favorite Dean snarky moment? The guys just played off each other so well, and we love the way they work together. Plus, Sam and Dean revisited some of the themes that have served them so well over the past couple of seasons: Loyalty, paying off debts, Dean being determined to honor his father’s presumed will while Sam was less sure about it all.
We all liked the various fake-outs in this episode – did any of you guess that the mean, abusive guard was actually they guys’ contact on the inside? That took us by surprise. Deacon did far too convincing a job at being a bad guy. Plus, who would have guessed that the vengeful ghost wasn’t an expired psycho killer, but was instead a former nurse?
Finally, we all loved the guest actors in this episode. We applauded the return of Agent Hendrickson – he’s a great foil for the boys, and his mere presence was almost – almost – enough to wipe that smirk off Dean’s face. The various bad-ass cons were perfectly done – we loved poor doomed Tiny, with his self-esteem issues. And who would have thought that they’d be able to find a guest actor even taller than Sam? Plus, the guys’ feisty lawyer did a great job fending off Hendrickson – she might be someone we’d like to see again.
But that kind of gets us to the part that some of us aren’t so sure about.
The show did such a fantastic job building the sense of menace, the “we’re so screwed” attitude, in Night Shifter, that it was sort of jarring to have Dean, especially, acting so cavalier about potential consequences. Agent Hendrickson isn’t just a pretty face – he’s a competent agent who’s obsessed with bringing the boys down. Last time, the guys got that. This time, they sort of ignored that fact. It didn’t ring true for some of us.
And while we all liked the guys’ lawyer, her sudden conversion to the guys’ cause, with no real evidence other than some weird facts and Dean looking deep into her eyes and telling her they were on the side of the angels, didn’t quite sit right with some of us. Granted, the guys rocked their prison jumpsuits, and Dean was quite sincere when he talked to her, but would that really be enough for a seasoned attorney to risk her law license and lie to the Feds? We weren’t sure. And perhaps we’re paranoid, but we couldn’t help but think maybe her participation in this wasn’t accidental – is she part of some sort of demonic plot? Or did she just genuinely believe in the boys?
So what did you think? Do you love it, hate it, or think it sort of missed the mark? Did the ghost scare you sufficiently? Were you fooled by Deacon’s bad-guard act? Do you buy that Hendrickson would let the guys slip through his fingers again? And how obsessed with he be with catching the Winchester boys now that they’ve eluded him twice? Discuss!
