Gossip Girl Podcast: The Magnificent Archibalds

Listen Now

Gossip Girl had its moments this episode, but some of the plots left us unimpressed. Have the characters really learned so little over the course of the last season and a half? Apparently not.

Nothing says Thanksgiving like your ex-lover and your newly eyeliner-free, formerly homeless daughter gathered arond the kitchen island and waiting for a feast.
It's Turkey Day in Manhattan, but all is not well. Blair is furious that Eleanor is apparently going to sully the holiday by announcing her engagement to Cyrus, so she (and Dorota) take to the streets. Jenny has been camping out at the van der Woodsen/Bass residence (and if you have to be homeless, it's best to have a penthouse to crash in), and she's surprised when the adults come home a day early and discover her. Lily also discovers the emancipation papers Jenny is toting around, and she calls Rufus. Meanwhile, Nate is surprised to find his father back in town, saying he wants to whisk the family away to his Caribbean hideaway. But an FBI agent who finds him through Vanessa lets him know that the Captain is up to no good. What will Nate do? Plus, Eric finds the files full of surveillance that Bart has amassed on the whole family, Serena decides to lie to and/or for her man, and Vanessa hopes to rekindle things with Nate. When. And to think we spend most of Thanksgiving just digesting!

Listen in as we express our horror at Serena's sartorial choices, and give our theories as to what the hell happened there. Plus, find out what put Mia to sleep, discover what caused Jackie to issue an alert, and learn how you, too, can date Nate Archibald!

Gossip Girl: Thanksgiving with a Side of Drama

Seriously, WHAT was Serena THINKING with that DRESS?
For most of us, the height of Thanksgiving drama might be a battle for the remote post-feast or a squabble between cousins. But on Gossip Girl, Thanksgiving means possible emancipation, extortion, mega-spying, and lying -- and that's all before the turkey.

This episode had us raving (Chuck and Nate reunited! Lily and Rufus reunited!) and ranting (Serena and Aaron ANYTHING, Vanessa's devious ways). Everyone's dealing with their own holiday-induced angst: Nate's dad is back in town and wants to abruptly move the family to the Caribbean, which seems awfully suspicious.

Jenny's been crashing at the van der Woodsen/Bass residence, but Lily's found out and wants her to go back to Casa Humphrey. Jenny's vague about her actual plans, but after she wanders off, Lily finds out exactly what they are when she comes across emancipation papers in Jenny's bag.

Gossip Girl Podcast: "Bonfire of the Vanity"

Listen Now

Gossip Girl wasn't really floating our boat this week. Yes, there were some good moments, and one particular guest star who made me squeal with geekish glee, but for the most part, we were underwhelmed. Where was the sex, the scandal, the intrigue? For that matter, wehre was Eric, Nate and Vanessa? Did anyone miss them?

Serena meets Cyrus.
In the least realistic plot point in Gossip Girl history, New York Magazine hires Dan to write a dirt-digging article on Bart Bass. Bart takes Dan under his wing after Dan throws Rufus under the bus, much to Chuck's chagrin. Meanwhile, Jenny is finding out her partner, Agnes, is a total nutjob, but the weight of all her eyeliner makes it impossible to flee to the hills. Blair is appalled to learn that her mom is smitten with someone who's less Cary Grant and more Danny De Vito (actually, the divine Wallace Shawn), and so she decides she must destroy him. Serena continues her quasi-relationship with Aaron, but she discovers she's not his only muse -- or date! The horror!

Learn what finally made Jackie renounce her love for Rufus, find out what makes me get my shrink on, and hear Mia's fabulous take on Jenny in distress. Plus, we give advice for what to do when someone dumps your clothing in a trash can, compare Blair's 17th and 18th birthday parties, and argue over the best reference from Wallace Shawn.

Gossip Girl: Second Chances

When Cyndi Lauper is worried about your clothing choices, you know something is wrong.
Was this Bad Decision Week or did we miss something? What else could explain the rash of ill-advised moves during last night's episode of Gossip Girl? Serena gave questionable Aaron a chance after more of his weird hot-and-cold games. Jenny decided that emancipation was her only answer. Meanwhile, Dan found whatever glimmer of a soul he may still possess and didn't out the Bass scandal... but the fact that he even considered it makes him lose points in our book.

Here's what went down. Jenny's plan to go into business with Agnes rapidly devolves into disaster when they clash over work ethics and business plans. Agnes freaks out when she finds out Jenny's getting some contracts behind her back -- and proceeds to burn Jenny's dresses. There goes Lil' J's last hope at doing her own thing.

Blair's mom is dating again, and Blair has visions of a Cary-Grant-like gentleman... but instead, Eleanor's new bf is a short, stout, balding guy with a catchphrase (shudder). Blair's determined to break them up, but she ends up bonding with the guy. When he gets Cyndi Lauper to show up at Blair's 18th birthday party, she has to admit that he's a step ahead of her, and grudgingly allows him into her life... only to find out that he and Eleanor have hit it off so much that he's moving in!

Serena and Aaron seem to be off to a good start -- he's sending her maps to beautiful places, somehow getting their images projected on the video screens of Times Square, and even asking her to pose for him as his muse. Oh, and she's blowing off Blair's birthday party planning sessions to hang out with the guy. But when Serena finds out he's dating other people, she gets (understandably) upset -- he acted so interested! She's not a date-around kind of girl. Somehow, when Aaron comes over and tells her he really likes her, and that she should give him a chance, she agrees, and spontaneously skips through the park in her slip with him. We still don't see how their situation has changed, like, at all, but for some reason, Serena keeps giving this guy another chance.

Dan's story was the most unbelievable (and that's saying something on this show) -- he's recruited to write an expose on Bart Bass, thanks to his compelling fiction contribution to the Paris Review. Dan pretends to be a Bart admirer and asks some fairly harmless interview questions -- then he asks if he can shadow Bart a few days a week. Then Dan digs up some major dirt about a fire that happened twenty years ago -- a secret so big that it could ruin the Bass family if it ever came out. Dan considers publishing it, but ultimately he just sends a copy of the story about Chuck to Bart, who realizes that it's time to build a relationship with his son.

Gossip Girl Podcast: "There Might Be Blood"

Listen Now

In yet another jam-packed episode, Jenny takes the New York fashion world by storm, then takes the the streets. Dan draws a lesson from his sister's success -- but it is the right one? Our favorite bad girl and boy out themselves as true romantics (after a fashion), while the golden girl continues to be confused by the attentions of her erstwhile "husband" -- is he a caterpillar, or a snake?

Jate? Nenny? Whatever they're called, they got friendly this episode.

Jenny and Agnes plan their conquest of the fashion world, but Jenny is aghast to find out the targeted event is one that honors Bart and Lily. Will she be able to go through with it? Duh! It's a smashing success -- the only folks who don't seem delighted by the co-opting of the event are Bart and Rufus. Lily? She's thrilled!

We were plenty thrilled by the episode, although for different reasons -- which gave us lots to fight about discuss in a calm and measured fashion. Jackie continues to waver on Rufus -- yes, he's her ideal man, but she despairs at his parenting choices. Plus, now she's mad at Lily, Jenny, Blair, Dan... who isn't she angry at? And Jackie's the nice one!

In addition, the three of us debate the ethics -- and success -- of Jenny's show, ponder what's going on in Dan's head, debate Nate's dating criteria, and throw up our hands at the Serena/Aaron interaction. At least Chuck and Blair's encounters made us happy -- and who knew these two would make a case for waiting until you're in love to get naked?

Gossip Girl: Crashing The Ball

Rufus is pissed, but Lily is a fan.
Whoa. In one episode, Jenny went from living the high life to living on the streets! Meanwhile, Nate stumbles into a new living situation and out of a new relationship, Dan decides to abandon his morals in favor of success, Serena pursues an elusive artist, and Blair pursues a determined virgin (but not like that).

Jenny's about to make her debut as a designer -- with her model pal Agnes's help, they'll crash a high-society charity ball and show New York what J. Humphrey Designs are all about. Not so fast, Little J! Dan and Nate walk into the loft just as she and Agnes are heading for the show. Jenny begs Dan to just let her go to the show, and he reluctantly agrees, with some convincing from Vanessa.

Blair is stuck with a B plot... or should we say an E plot? She's chaperoning Emma, a teenage wild child with very influential parents. If Blair can pull it off, she just might have more clout when it comes to getting into Yale. But instead of movies and ice cream, Emma has more adult plans in mind -- she wants to lose her virginity! And she doesn't really care who the lucky guy is. This leads Blair, Serena and Chuck to chase the girl around town, thwarting her efforts with one guy after another... until they run into Emma's mom -- and she's not exactly having a wholesome evening out. No, she's making out with another man who's definitely not her husband! Blair snaps a photo for future blackmail use.

Gossip Girl Podcast: "Pret a Poor J"

Listen Now

This week's episode of Gossip Girl caused more than a few arguments here at CW Source Central. We all agreed on the hotness of the opening scene, and we were all undecided on artist Aaron, but after that, all bets were off.

Jenny finally has it with Eleanor, and at the prompting of a wild-child model, she quits the company. Was that a good move, or incredibly stupid? We can't agree. Nate and Jenny finally get together, and one of us thinks it was hot, while the other two remain unmoved. Two of us were appalled by the skeeze factor of the scruffy photographer, but the other one thinks he didn't do anything wrong. Then there's the heartbreaking Blair'/Chuck confrontation, Rufus' continuing failures at parenting, Dan's responsibility (if any) for Chuck and Blair's troubles, and Little J's bad behavior. So much happened!

Find out who had a violent reaction to Jenny's hair and makeup, learn what made Mia mangle her metaphors, listen in as we discuss Nate's motives, and tell us what you think of the photographer -- creepy or harmless? Plus, is Aaron a good guy, and is Agnes nothing but trouble? Find out what we think -- then tell us if you agree!

Gossip Girl: Lil' J Gone Wild!

I KNOW! Can you BELIEVE my hair?
Whoa, Lil' J! We knew she'd be fighting with Eleanor this week thanks to some revealing previews, but we never thought she'd be cavorting shirtless with new model pal Agnes while a skeezy photog snapped away. Not to mention -- she actually quit! Quitting school was one thing, but quitting the internship that was supposed to be her ticket to fame and fortune is quite another.

Does Jenny really know how to start her own line? Does Jenny even know where to draw the line when it comes to wild nights out? We're still a little stunned by her half strip-tease with Agnes. Fortunately, Nate showed up before things got too out of hand, and these two look like they're actually going to give their relationship a try this time. But this is a lot on Jenny's plate, isn't it? A new line, a new relationship -- oh, yeah, and a dad who's not going to like these developments one bit. We can't wait to see what happens to her next week.

Speaking of giving relationships a try, well, that's exactly what Chuck and Blair are NOT doing. Yeah, we're disappointed, too. After weeks of Chuck and Blair schemes, the plotting and back-and-forth dissolved into a weak goodbye speech and kiss. The pair agreed that being a couple probably wouldn't work, so they'll stop the games for now and maybe revisit things in the future. We get why they're taking a break from it all, but as viewers, we feel totally let down. Half a season's worth of foreplay and nothing? Well, at least we got some hot moments (um, hello, opening scenes), and we now know that Chuck Bass can't resist the nape of a woman's neck.

Gossip Girl Podcast: "Chuck in Real Life"

Listen Now

So much going on this week on Gossip Girl! Vanessa decides to try her hand at blackmail when she enlists/forces Blair to help her campaign to save a historic bar. This prompts Blair to put Chuck's talents to use -- seduce and destroy! But Chuck demands a little quid pro quo, which Blair seems eager to grant him. Too bad things don't end up like she expects!

Chuck gets strangely uncomfortable when Bart asks for a popsicle

Meanwhile, Serena is adjusting to a very new family dynamic -- Bart seems to want her and Eric to follow rules and have a curfew, which is completely alien to her. She acts out as only Serena can, sharing tales of what it was like to grow up with Lily as a mom. Then there's Dan and Nate's friendship, which takes a turn when Dan discovers Nate is hiding a big old secret. Plus -- Eric gets a boyfriend, Jenny and Rufus get to mock Dan, and Bart gets a bit of an image makeover.

It was enough to leave us with plenty of opinions -- and Jackie, Mia and I are happy to share! Find out who we nominate as All-Knowing Oracle of the Upper East Side, discover what sent Jackie on a mini-rant, learn when Mia last saw her values, and find out what sent us completely over the conversation edge.

Gosspi Girl: Chuck is ... Chuck

Eric, to Bart: No, really, we're supposed to see you as the good guy now? I think I preferred the Klauses
Our two favorite socialites are back to their wily ways in this week's episode of "Gossip Girl" and for once this season, they’re (thankfully) not shooting daggers towards each other. While Serena tried to sabotage Lily and Bart's attempt to fashion a PR-perfect familial unit a la "The Brady Bunch," Blair enlisted Chuck's help to eliminate the threat posed by Vanessa and those racy photos of Lord Marcus and the Duchess entwined still taking up precious memory in her camera phone. Bromance is in the air as Nate eschewed Chuck in favor of down-to-earth Dan. Never a dull moment with this bunch. Here's the rundown:

Serena chafes at the new house rules laid down by Lily and Mr. Bass, husband number…oh well, we lost track. Actually they're more like guidelines than rules: no more hitting the town on school nights, dinner together every Friday night (did we just step into a "Gilmore Girls" alternate reality?) and a 1 a.m. weekend curfew (sounds good to us – we remember the days of racing to make it home before the "Weekend Update" segment on "Saturday Night Live" hit).

For the sake of her mother, Serena does her duty and hangs up her dancing shoes until Chuck reveals that the happy family shtick is merely a publicity stunt. While Serena's high profile social liaisons made Yale salivate, frequent appearances on the pages of Page Six send Bart's Midwest business associates running back to flat land and brutal winters. Nothing says retaliation quite like a peek-a-boo silk dress, which Serena devilishly flaunts in Bart's face before breaking two out of three of the Bass/Van der Woodsen commandments.

Gossip Girl Podcast: "New Haven Can Wait"

Listen Now

The Gossip Girl Gang goes on college visits, and mayhem ensues. Somehow, we don't seem to remember catfights, betrayals, bondage, secret societies, mistaken identities and bounteous blackmail material back when we were prospective students, but perhaps we weren't applying to the right places. Or maybe we just didn't have Chuck, Blair, Serena, Nate and Dan to liven things up for us!

Do you think Blair would be smiling if she knew what kind of peril her headband would soon face?

Blair makes a tactical error when she scoffs that Serena would never get into a real college, like Yale. This prompts Serena to take the Dean up on his personal invitation to visit the campus, and the fur starts flying! We loved watching these two competitors square off, but we couldn't help but feel one was more wrong than the other.

Meanwhile, Chuck is evaluating colleges based on secret societies, Nate is struggling with being known as The Captain's son, Dan screws up his application (for a smart guy, Dan makes some boneheaded moves...) and the Yalies are reeling from the Upper East Side's descent on campus. Plus, Jenny attempts to sway Rufus to her way of thinking, and she gets help from a surprising ally.

Find out what we have to say about the Blair/Serena skirmishes, hear what costumes we appreciated (and which left us cold), ponder with us the vagaries of hazing, and learn where literary criticism really doesn't fly. Plus, find out why I was rocking out to the string quartet at the Dean's party!

Gossip Girl Recap: New Haven Can Wait

The Upper East Side was missing more than a few of its finest on this week's episode of Gossip Girl. Our favorite students of Constance Billard and St. Jude's made their way to Yale's New Haven, Connecticut campus. As per usual, nothing is ordinary when this group come to town.

Chuck Bass

The Blair/Serena feud is alive and well. It is made abundantly clear that it has been Blair's dream to go to Yale since she was a little girl; Serena's plans were to head to Lily's alma mater - Brown. This all changes when Blair offends Serena's intelligence insisting she couldn't get into Yale. Blair of course doesn't know that the higher-ups have been wooing her to join their Ivy League hallways. She got a hand-written letter, "in cursive", asking her to consider - which she does as soon as Blair opens her mouth.

We thought Dan was all about going to Dartmouth, but as luck would have it, he's now interested in Yale's English program. Too bad he didn't spend his summer actually writing anything - he probably would have had the all-important second letter of recommendation that he needed. Thus begins the Dan Humphrey race to find a recommendation from a complete stranger.

Chuck isn't interested in the academia, just the Skull and Bones secret society. Since he's Chuck Bass, he lets the school come to him, not the other way around. Nate uses his time to do what he does best - sit there and look pretty. As soon as they get on campus a horny coed catches his eye and they make some small talk. Apparently Nate's presence on campus is widely known and many of the students aren't exactly thrilled with the son of the man who lost their trust funds. The quick-thinker that he is, Nate decides to use Dan Humphrey's name instead of his own in order to get in the girl's pants.

Gossip Girl News: Details on the Boys, An Unexpected Love Interest, and More!

If you haven't seen it yet, you must check out this issue of Details magazine with the Gossip Girl guys on the cover. The pictures are delicious, but the article is even better – the writer really got the guys to relax and talk candidly with him. Some of our favorite quotes:

  • Chace talks about all the smack talk that's come out about him: "Model turned actor, dime a dozen, eye candy, doesn't know what he's doing ... and Perez Hilton says I have 'gayface.' So on top of everything else, I have to overcome gayface."
  • Chace on his high-school experience: "I'm pretty sure I wasn't having sex with any cougars."
  • Penn, on Chace: "It's like he was genetically bred to be a teen star."
  • Penn on his demeanor: "People who don't know me that well often think I'm a bit of an asshole and take myself too seriously. I don't take anything seriously. [J]ust because I'm not smiling doesn't mean I'm not happy. Chace is one of the most positive guys I've ever met, and you can see that in the way he walks around. I'm also like that—but you can't see it."
  • Ed on his vocal model for Chuck Bass: "I don't know, man, there's a slight thing in Carlton Banks [of The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire], that kind of über-preppy, that I did pick up on."
  • Ed on Chuck's "evil" ways: "It's not like Chuck is stickin' a knife to a granny's throat. He's just mischievous."

Gossip Girl Podcast: "The Serena Also Rises"

This episode really got us talking! We love the way this show can combine serious bad behavior with a whole lot of heart -- even (or maybe especially!) the villains have compelling reasons behind their actions!

Jenny gets a round of applause -- but Rufus isn't clapping

There was so much going on this week. Jenny is skipping school to be indispensable to Eleanor Waldorf, but she runs afoul of Blair. Meanwhile, Serena starts to embrace the limelight, Dan follows Chuck for a walk on the wild side, and Lily realizes just what she's done by marrying Bart.

But that's not all! Find out what pushed Jackie over the edge, what Mia thinks about the guy in the bar, and how I deal with Dan's writerly habits. Plus, we discuss who we'd rather be minions for and say how we really feel about Charlie Trout.

Gossip Girl: Fashion Week Wars!

It's Fashion Week in NYC! Time for a break from Nate, Vanessa and the incestuous royals who've dominated our screens for the past few weeks -- this episode was a return to good, old-fashioned Gossip Girl one-upmanship. Between Blair's relentless plotting, Serena's effortless It Girl status, and Jenny's bratty defiance, the episode had a real Season One flavor. But it got even better than that -- we got scenes like Dan and Chuck bonding and Serena standing up to Blair that we would never have seen a year ago. Let's recap:

Jenny's skipped school for the past two weeks to prepare for Eleanor Waldorf's big fashion show. It's worth it to her, though -- she's living her dream. What she doesn't realize is that she's also crushing Blair's ego just by doing her job. Example #1: Jenny rearranges the seating chart to place Serena and Co. in the front row at Eleanor's request. How dare she! Blair is furious and vows to get back at Jenny. It's easy to do, too -- all she has to do is show up feigning concern for Jenny's "illness" at the Humphrey residence. Once Rufus realizes Jenny's been cutting, he's on the phone with the headmistress trying to get her another chance. Oh, and he's also making Jenny leave work -- now. Education is important, even if Little J only wants to learn about bustles and bows.

Serena's been hanging out with a new socialite pal, Poppy, who wants to attend Eleanor Waldorf's fashion show with Serena. Serena's not so sure -- she and Blair have always sat together backstage. It's a tradition! But Poppy and Lily convince Serena that Blair will be okay with it. Besides, Blair can join S and Poppy at the Marc Jacobs party!

Gossip Girl Goodies: Ed and Drew, Chuck and Vanessa, and a Tragic Jenny Humphrey

would you make out with this man?Heads up, people! We're got a slew of juicy Gossip Girl goodness, and we just have to share!

First up, there's the much-ballyhooed Ed Westwick/Drew Barrymore makeout session. We're sure you've heard about this, but we just had to weigh in. It seems the two were caught giving each other mouth-to-mouth at a Kings of Leon concert in New York. There's even a picture -- although we have to admit it disappoints. It's just the back of a couple of smoochers' heads. At least on the show, Gossip Girl's guerilla photographers always manage to catch a perfectly framed, easily identifiable shot of the quarry. This one wouldn't make our mysterious gossip maven's strict standards.

So we've got to know -- what do you think of an Ed/Drew pairing? And what would we call them? EDrew? DrewEd? WestMore? BarryWick? None of these really work for us. But if the two are having fun together, we're happy for them. What about you?

There's more!

Gossip Girl Podcast: "The Ex Files"

Listen Now

School's back in session, and that means some seriously shaken up relationships. Lord Marcus is sleeping with Catherine!? Lily's suddenly the one making moves on Rufus? DAN's the first one to move on after he and Serena end things? And now Serena's possibly evil? Um, are we living in some kind of alternate Gossip Girl universe?

The old Serena's baaaaack....

Well, not quite. Chuck's still scheming (is he ever!), Jenny's still being tortured by the populars but kind of loving it, and Nate and Vanessa are both still a bit dim. All this back-to-school upheaval means Sarah, Mia and I have plenty to say on our latest Gossip Girl podcast!

We're enjoying how Chuck's plotting has overturned Constance Billard's society rankings and produced a new, potentially reckless Queen Bee Serena. We all have a good rant about Dan 's behavior (seriously, why doesn't he listen to us? He'd be so much better off), but we're torn about Nate and Vanessa (I'm feeling sorry for her, but they're not so sure). Plus, we discuss the neat wrap-up of the Catherine/Marcus plot, debate Jenny's place in high school, and think Lily deserved this taste of her own medicine.

Gossip Girl: School for Scandal

For Manhattan's elite, a brand new school year means loads of excitement, scandal, and (you guessed it) gossip. It looks like our favorite Upper East Side members are already on their way to making this a year no one will be able to forget.

After last week's dramatic breakup between Dan and Serena, we couldn’t help but feel a slight case of déjà vu. Haven't they been through this before? Anyways, last night, things were definitely shaky between the two. At first, things were just plain awkward, and they couldn't bear to see one another. But quickly, (maybe a little too quickly) Dan Humphrey found himself another flame -- Amanda. What did you guys think of her at first? We had a feeling that she was doomed after she was spotted with Dan by Blair Waldorf. Knowing what kind of friend B is, she took action in trying to separate the two in order to shield Serena's heart. But this Amanda girl had the guts to go against Blair and be out with Dan at a bar. Not a good idea.
